How to Play Poker?

Poker is a touted skill-based game that is quick to learn but takes time to master. This card game has many popular variations like Texas Hold‘em Poker, Omaha, Round of Each, etc. On Poker Magnet you can learn and play various variations of poker online.

In most poker variations, the game begins with the first round of betting where some players can fold their hands, and others can join the action, with one or more players making a bet (small blind, big blind, call or raise).

After meeting the bets of the first round, the “flop” opens with three cards on the board and the second round of betting begins with the players that haven’t folded. The action begins clockwise from the dealer button as players either raise their hands, check, fold, or match the raised bet.

A player who matches a bet may also “raise” the bet as per their will. The betting round then ends and a new card opens on the board known as the “turn’ card. Another round of betting begins in a similar way as earlier and after the betting is finished the “river” card opens on the board. The final round of betting begins after which a “showdown” takes place where the hands are revealed, and the player with the winning hand takes the pot where all the bets are collected.

  1. Pre-flop- After the cards are dealt to all the players present on the table, an initial round of betting begins where player on the UTG (Under the Gun) position makes the first move by either calling the big blind or raising the hand or folding on the basis of the strength of his cards. The betting round continues in a clockwise manner till the circle is completed ending on the big blind position.
  2. Flop- 3 community cards are dealt on the table (known as the flop) with their face up for everyone to see and a similar betting round begins.
  3. Turn- After the betting finishes at the flop, another community card is opened on the table, and a similar betting round is initiated.
  4. River- After the betting finishes post turn, another community card is opened on the table, and a similar betting round is commenced.
  5. Post river- This is the final betting round after which the showdown takes place where the combination of best 5 cards (dealt hand and community cards) is the winning hand.

Texas Hold’em

Texas Hold’em is the most popular variant of poker. You can play poker online on Poker Magnet using virtual money. In Texas Hold’em poker, each player is dealt two private cards at the beginning which are called the hole cards. A total of five community cards are distributed, face up in three stages. The three cards which are dealt with one by one after every round (stage) are called ‘flop’, ‘turn’, and ‘river’ respectively. From the five cards on the table, and two of the players’ cards, every player seeks the best possible poker hand. Texas Hold ‘em is among the most played free online poker games.

Omaha

Omaha is another favorite variation of Poker which is similar to Texas Hold ‘em Poker. In this variant, players are dealt with four instead of two cards like in Texas Hold ‘em. However, players can only use two cards from the dealt four, and five community cards to create a hand.

Omaha Hi-Lo

Omaha Hi-Lo is a highly popular variant of poker, especially in the online poker scene. This is one poker variant that can land a player in the biggest pots when they play poker online with virtual money. Also known as Omaha/8, it is a split pot game where the pot is divided equally among two players – the one that makes the highest qualifying hand, and the one that makes the lowest qualifying hand. The rules are identical to Omaha, except when it comes to the showdown where the pot is divided. Whereas in the case of Omaha or Omaha High, only the higher hand wins and there is nothing for the lowest qualifying hand. The entire split of the pot and the fact that lower cards are of equal importance is what makes this variant of poker highly popular. It is a highly popular version of online poker, and many people who are looking for big pot wins play online poker for virtual money, especially this variant.

6+ SHORT DECK

Short deck or 6+ Hold’em Poker is a variant of poker similar to the traditional Texas Hold’em. Unlike the traditional 52 card deck game, the deck size in 6+ Hold’em poker is reduced to 36, hence the name short deck poker. The 36 card deck size is achieved by eliminating the 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s from the deck. This means that the aces can be used to make the low and high end of a Straight so instead of A-2-3-4-5, the lowest possible straight is A-6-7-8-9 in a game of 6+ Hold’em poker.

ROUND OF EACH (R.O.E)

It is an exciting game variant for someone who’s looking to learn and explore different game variants of poker and is also popular amongst player’s who want to break the monotony of playing one game variant all the time.
